For years if I sprained my ankle or burned myself while working in the kitchen, I was always told that I needed to ice the injury. The term "RICE" (rest, ice, compression, elevate) is has been used by medical professional for years since Gabe Mirkin, MD coined the term.
Most people that I know have used "RICE" for their acute injuries to help with the healing process and slow down the inflammation process that comes naturally to the our bodies. However, after many years of fallowing this procedure and looking at the result or lack there of, Dr. Mirkin feels that perhaps this isn't the most beneficial way to help the healing process.
The body will naturally produce inflammation as a way to heal itself. So by slowing the natural inflammation process slows down the healing process. I know personally I never liked icing an injury, I don't like the cold or being cold. I always gravitated to heat for minor injuries, I'm glad that I wasn't doing more damage like many people told me I was doing.
Below is a link that gives more information on how ice delays the body's natural healing process.
